A denture is a dental appliance used to replace missing teeth and allows you to enjoy a healthy diet and a confident smile. While complete dentures replace all of your natural teeth in the upper or lower jaw, partial dentures are attached to your natural teeth to fill the gaps left behind by lost teeth.

While the traditional dentures are inserted after teeth removal and complete healing of the tissues, which usually takes several weeks to months, immediate dentures can be inserted immediately after the tooth extraction. The measurements and impressions of your mouth are taken prior to the extraction to fabricate your dentures so that dentures can be placed by the dentist. One of the primary benefits of immediate dentures includes not having to stay teeth less during the entire healing period. Since bone and gums can shrink with time (usually during the first 6-8 months after teeth removal), immediate dentures require a final adjustment such as a reline, rebase, or a replacement. 

The base of a denture (called a plate) is made of acrylic or metal. The teeth are normally made of acrylic or a combination of acrylic and porcelain. Dentures are available in a variety of colours, shapes and sizes in order to provide you with a natural-looking smile.  

Eating with a new set of dentures will take a little time and practice. Your denturist will assist you with tips on adapting to your new dentures and get back to eating the foods you love. You can begin with soft foods cut into small pieces. Chew slowly, using both sides of your back teeth at the same time to avoid the movement of your newly-fitted dentures. After some time, other foods can be added to your diet till you return to your normal healthy diet. 

You may need to wear them for most of the time initially, including while sleeping. After initial adjustment, we may advise you to remove them before sleeping to give rest to your gums and promote oral health. 

Yes, but only if you want it! We can fabricate dentures to resemble your natural teeth so that little change in appearance will be noticeable. Alternatively, if you are unhappy with your natural teeth, new dentures can be made to enhance your smile and overall appearance.  

You will require time to adapt to your new dentures and even some practice to pronounce certain words. Loud reading and repetition of difficult words will help you improve. 

After the adjustment period, you can eat them, but there will be some exceptions. Some practice will allow you to eat properly after a while, starting with soft foods, cutting them into small pieces and chewing slowly using both sides of your mouth to avoid denture movement. Other foods can be added after you become used to it until returning to your normal diet. The exceptions? Eating sticky snacks like toffee and candy is not recommended!

Well-fitted dentures are made with a multi-step process, so the time to "fabricate" the dentures is not the primary concern. Depending on your particular needs and the type of dentures you require, it typically takes 3-4 appointments to fabricate and 2-3 weeks from start to completion. 

Like anything, over a period of time, dentures will need to be relined or replaced. This is due to normal wear or changes that occur in your mouth as you age (i.e. receding/shrinking bone and gum ridges causing loose and ill-fitting dentures). It is important to replace dentures if they are worn or ill-fitting to avoid problems such as irritated and sore gums. Most standard dentures require refitting or replacement after 5 years. With proper care, most dentures have a lifespan of about five to seven years. Regular checkups, maintenance, and adjustments will help you increase the lifespan of your dentures.  

It is essential to ensure proper fitting and check for any possible damage. Gum and facial changes affect the comfort and fitting of your dentures, and poorly fitted dentures will worsen over time and even affect your speech. It is easy to fix minor changes to your dentures quickly, but cracks or chips that are left unchecked can even result in major fractures. 

New dentures should fit securely without using a denture adhesive unless otherwise advised by your denturist. If you don't feel that your dentures are secure, please make an appointment to see our denturist to assess the cause of your ill-fitting denture. In case you are waiting to see the denturist or making your new dentures, it is fine to use a fixative for a while. 

Dental implants are permanent anchors of titanium that are inserted into the jawbone and act much like root replacements of natural teeth. After they are implanted, your jaw bone and the implant body integrate into ‘one' (osteointegration), offering a stable anchor to fabricate a denture. 2-4 implants are usually required, and the entire process often takes 3-5 months from start to completion. We will work with, or refer you to, an oral surgeon/ specialist/dentist to place the dental implants.
